HIV+ Sex Workers welcome England fans to South Africa
The South African World Cup is upon us but don’t blow your vuvuzela just yet. For England fans at the tournament - Rob Green’s goalkeeping skills are nothing to worry about. Of more concern should be the deadly combination of alcohol and the HIV-positive sex workers who had the ‘the mother of all welcoming parties.’
On Saturday 50,000 football supporters descended on the Royal Bafokeng Stadium and the fanpark in nearby Rustenburg for England versus USA World Cup opener. Mpho, 34, a local sex worker from the Freedom Park Squatter Camp, a sprawling shantytown said “we have been waiting for the English and Americans to come to town and now that they are finally here, we are going to offer them a treat they will never forget.”
England fans need to be aware that South Africa has the highest number of people infected with HIV in the world — 5.7 million sufferers. It therefore goes without saying that as many as half of South Africa's sex workers are HIV-positive.
Georgina Boswell, a community nurse and midwife from west London, is seen as a Mother Teresa figure in these parts for the life-saving frontline work she has been carrying out for two
decades.
Georgina message is quite simple “our HIV problem is massive. Don't get involved with these sex workers! Don't even go there! And if you do, make sure you've prepared your will.”

Know morePruProtect have created a great new product that covers you for Life cover and also private medical insurance. Pruprotect's Health Cover and Health Cover Optimiser will offer clients access to medical insurance in a way that has not been seen before that could really shake the market. It could also save you 25% on cover.
James Markwick from Lifebroker who attended the launch of the product of the product at the London IMAX last night said "it is great to see two huge sections of a company work together. I have been very impressed with PruProtect and this again shows that although they are a huge company, they still seem to be able to move quick and surprise you. Some companies that Lifebroker works with, for example Aviva could not manage to pull this off".
PruProtect clients will now be able to easily add health cover to pay for the cost of private medical treatment for a wide range of acute conditions including day-to-day treatment, seeing a specialist or having an operation.
There are 3 levels of cover;
- comprehensive
- primary
- heart and cancer cover.
The Health Cover Optimiser is simply added to PruProtect's Serious Illness Cover, saving 25% compared to buying health cover from PruHealth.
With the Optimiser clients can choose either:
- Full lump sum / no private medical treatment
- reduced lump sum / full medical treatment
The great thing here is that your choice can be made at the point of claim offering flexibility cutting out the overlap between the covers. For conditions that do not trigger a serious illness claim, the health cover would cover treatment in the normal way.
At the launch Jobanputra spoke about how the products aim to provide wide ranging depth and breadth of health cover to consumers. "You don't know what cover you need when buying that product (either critical illness or PMI), so we are offering flexibility of cover and choice at a very much reduced cost," he says. “I've often heard consumers say that PMI is a luxury product, with the cost often cited as an issue, so we're making the product more accessible to a wider range of customers - not just to one product, but a range of options underlying that product.”
Lifebroker is looking forward to working with PruProtect's health cover product.

Know moreLife Insurance for people with Diabetes
Trying to get personal insurance can be time consuming at the best of times, but when you have a pre existing medical condition such as diabetes can make it even more painful. When it comes to applying for life insurance, critical illness cover or income protection it is paramount that you make the insurer aware that you have diabetes so that you’re a guaranteed to benefit from the insurance if you are to make a claim in the future.
It goes without saying that some insurance companies are more accommodating to people with diabetes that others, however they will all want to know as much as possible about your diabetes. Remember that the more that they want to know about your condition the better as they are more likely to payout. As
a rule of thumb they will write to your Specialist or GP asking them to complete a diabetes questionnaire. The information they get back will allow the insurer to assess whether or not they can insure you; and if so, if they can offer you a standard price or an increased one die to the insurer's increased risk.
Lifebroker specialises in sourcing personal protection for people with diabetes. James Markwick, Managing Director at Lifebroker has some tips that will help when investigating your insurance options, "It is quite simple, to save yourself time make it clear that you have diabetes upfront, and allow yourself time to shop around as the application process can take a while. This will help you avoid a last minute panic buy especially if the insurance is needed for a mortgage. We deal with all the main life insurance companies in the UK and the tend to ask for pretty much the same information, the main things being the type of diabetes you have, when you were diagnosed, your recent HbA1c reading and your height and weight".
Lifebroker offer a free sourcing service where you can submit your contact information and a Lifebroker Consultant will contact you to collect the rest of the information from you via email or over the phone. Lifebroker will then shop around get an approximate cost before you go to the trouble of applying for cover.
